LANDSCAPE SITE DESIGN: PROJECT 5

Am I actually doing this? I cannot believe myself that I am forging ahead in designing a landscape. It has been only 3 months in the USA and still figuring out about places, culture and social life. It is a challenge for me to develop an idea for site design, our final project for this semester, in a situation where I still find myself an alien. However, site analysis and the model construction are very helpful to understand about the landscape and problems of site. Our project site is located in the ‘Old City’ in north Knoxville. And site is mainly an open spaced parking lot with old buildings. These building are used as residential, enterprises, industrial and food services. On meeting with clients, we got ideas about the site and the users need. To understand how the site could be developed in context of environmental, social and cultural context, the site analysis was done and model for that site was constructed initially to represent the topography and built environment of site.

How this urban landscape could be utilized to serve the people? How could I design this underutilized piece of parking lot into the usable and productive space? What could be one big problem of the site? If I can find the answers of these questions then I am right on my way for programming of site design.

ONE BIG PROBLEM: FRESH FOOD ACCESSBILITY

SOLUTION: EDIBLE GARDEN IN OLD CITY (GREEN CITY GARDEN, VEGETABLE ROOF GARDEN) CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH FRESH FOOD

I chose designer Beth Hagenbuch of  Kenneth Weikal Landscape Architecture, Farmington Hills, MI for my case study and the project was about .425 acre five times smaller the size of Old city Project ( 2.1 acre ).

Lafayette Green -“A productive vegetable garden that also functions as an engaging public space, it is a tangible expression of the possibilities for integrating urban agriculture into city spaces and city life in a way that is participatory, beautiful and productive” (Project Statement , 2012).

Project site for Project 5 is near to downtown, ‘Old City’ which is similar to the previous empty lot of Lafayette (kind of vacant space with less human activities). I am very much influenced with the concept of this project that offers feeding mouths for future. Moreover, Lafayette Green project provides appropriate solution for the storm water management and water usage, urban biodiversity, ecological based food production system and social interaction in terms of the sustainability. The project site in Old city can be thrived with similar concept encouraging the community participation, conducting educational program and attracting the food business.

Trying to figure out how the project site could be focal point. The concept of food accessibility is to make avail fresh food to the neighborhood within 1 mile of distance. As new green way route have been proposed nearby the site. I could possibly introduce the green way within the site. It is interesting to see how my design can relate with the context of site.

Final  Project Board and Project Model

Connecting people through food, it’s interesting to see different concept from others in old city.  All is clear from drawings and model but how???????”

Every reviewers have their own questions and suggestions. I feel that we should take their more of comments to refine ourselves. This is one person project with your own problem and solution.  Every one figured out different problems to project site. If we will make a team to incorporate all these problem and try to solve problem then the old city would revive in reality.

  1. that’ a kinda progressive concept, but just curious to know who’s gonna farm in the newly constructed garden. Will it be rented to local or controlled by the authorities??
